Foundation
Whether you are describing a plant or tree, a house or stadium, or a person, the foundation is everything. This painting evokes the old and the new with colors of red southern clay, green leaves, and golden sunset skies. The letters of the word foundation are raised and below it part of a building’s foundation plan. A newly sprouted plant is also part of the work and markings suggesting the roots below the ground. The visual and tactile textures urge you to run your fingers over the letters and even the sides of the painting to the quote of an unknown author: “Character is like the foundation of a house—it is below the surface.”
Maya Angelou says "living a life is like constructing a building: if you start wrong, you'll end wrong." She's right. The foundation is the most important part of the house; it is the base of the structure. It is what gives us the right start in life. This painting was part of series equating human life with architecture. The author of the quote written on the side of this painting is unknown: “Character is like the foundation of a house—it is below the surface.” In this artwork, gypsum paste was used to achieve the high texture. Other elements include acrylic paint, charcoal and colored pencils, and it is finished with museum quality wax for protection of the surface.
