Lichen Along Camp Alice Trail
Camp Alice was a historic logging camp and tourist railroad depot near the summit of Mount Mitchell in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Between the 1920âs and 1940âs tourists drove to Camp Alice and then hiked the strenuous one-quarter mile to the summit. Now it's a beautiful shady, rocky trail with twists and turns and an abundance of spruce and fir treesâmany of which appear to have snow on them even in the heat of summer because of the lichen.
